On January 24, scholars and graduate students gathered at the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU to share their research on the topic of Jews and Color.
The Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs presented a special presentation by Dr. Tudor Parfitt, Director of the Global Jewish Studies Program, followed by a tour of the exhibition “Discovery and Recovery: Preserving Iraqi Jewish Heritage,” currently on view at the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU.
On January 25, Tel Aviv University Vice-President, Dr. Raanan Rein joined FIU Global Jewish Studies Program Director Dr. Tudor Parfitt and FIU Spanish and Mediterranean Studies Program Director Dr. Aurora Morcillo in a conversation on Spain's newly instated "right of return" law and its implications.
This high profile conference is dedicated to both enhancing Jewish-Latino relations as well as raising awareness regarding the forced converts (Anousim) from the Iberian Peninsula and their descendants. It will feature leading scholars, public figures of both communities, spiritual leaders, heads of Jewish and Latino organizations, artists and authors. The city of Miami, with its high concentrations of both Latinos and Jews, will provide a dynamic backdrop to a dynamic conference.
Dr. Sergio Dellapergola, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, will discuss a broad overview of the demographic development of world Jewish population over many centuries. The event will close the Institute for Sefardi and Anousim Studies Reconnecting 2016 conference.
