Women’s leadership the subject of two programs, Feb. 18

Negotiating salary, supervisory skills and career mapping are some of the often-cited ways for women to become successful leaders. But one key ingredient typically missing is spirituality, which can be an invaluable tool, says one female leader who will discuss its benefits.

Writer and educator Dr. Erica Brown will give two talks on women’s leadership Tuesday, Feb. 18, one at Florida International University and the other at the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU. Presented by FIU’s Program in the Study of Spirituality, both programs are free of charge and open to the public.

The first program, titled “Nurturing Women’s Leadership: An Intimate View from the Hebrew Bible,” will be held 2 p.m. at the MARC Pavilion on the FIU campus, 11200 SW 8th St. in southwest Miami-Dade County.
That evening, Brown will speak on “Leaning In: Spiritual Growth and Women’s Leadership” at 7 p.m. at the museum, located at 301 Washington Ave., Miami Beach.

“The ‘leaning in/leaning back’ dilemma is not really about gender,” says Brown, referring to Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg’s bestseller, Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead. “At heart, it’s about personality and passion. Leaders need to know when to lean in and when to lean back.”
While there is “no one formula,” Brown continues, “there are some aids from our own mystical tradition that can help us assess where we are and might want to be in any given setting.”

No stranger to leaning in, Brown speaks from experience. The author of eight books including Inspired Jewish Leadership and the forthcoming Leadership in the Wilderness, she lectures and writes widely on subjects of Jewish interest and leadership. A scholar-in-residence at the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington who consults with a number of non-profit organizations, she writes columns for Psychology Today and The New York Jewish Week, among others.

Brown’s talks are co-sponsored by FIU’s Center for Leadership, Jewish Studies Initiatives and Women's Studies Program.
