Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies

In many periods throughout history, Jews have been forbidden from practicing their religion. In response, some converted to accepted religions, fled the country, or kept their religious practices private. Those that privately kept Jewish traditions and publicly accepted the major religion are known as Crypto-Jews. The Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies examines the historical background and relevant issues of the Crypto-Jews of Iberian origin. FIU is a leading member of the Society and publishes the Society’s Journal of Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian Crypto-Jews, which examines academic research on Crypto-Jews and their descendants from these regions.
