About

The Global Jewish Studies Program at Florida International University educates students, faculty and the wider South Florida community about Jewish history, culture, religion, literature, political science, and international relations. We offer academically rigorous, multidisciplinary courses on campus and online in a wide range of departments.

A Certificate in Jewish Studies is available to those who complete an eighteen-credit interdisciplinary course program. The certificate can complement a student's major or be a stand-alone program for non-matriculated students pursuing personal enrichment or professional credentialization.

The Global Jewish Studies Program also offers a variety of community outreach events that are open to the public and the FIU community. Events are held at the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU as well as on both FIU campuses. We sponsor and co-sponsor lectures and seminars as well musical and theatrical performances and films. Our speakers have included some of the leading thinkers and artists in the Jewish world, such as President Yitzhak Navon, Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz, Rabbi Dr. Avraham Steinberg, Prof. Deborah Dash Moore, Prof. Moshe Idel, Prof. Paula Hyman, Rodger Kamenetz, Rabbi Michael Lerner, Prof. Xu Xin, Prof. David Novack, Prof. Khaleel Mohammed, Rabbi Moshe Tendler, Rabbi Dr. Abraham Twerski, Rabbi Yehuda Berg, Rebbetzin Esther Jungreis, Senator Richard Stone, Ambassador Michael Oren, among others.

FIU is one of the largest and most diverse public universities in the nation, with a majority-minority student body and enrollment from over 140 countries. FIU earned an “A” rating from the Anti-Defamation League in 2025 in its annual Campus Antisemitism Report Card—one of only 23 U.S. institutions currently recognized for campus Jewish life and inclusion—establishing a powerful platform for cross-cultural learning, civic dialogue, and coalition-building among Jewish and non-Jewish communities alike.

Home to the third-largest Jewish population in the U.S., the Miami metropolitan area is a diverse and vibrant community with strong traditions of cultural expression and interfaith understanding, strategically positioned for collaboration with Jewish communities around the world, especially in Latin America, the Caribbean, and Israel.
